I can't resist any more. The French don't have conservation officers (photo) and have concrete and UPVC disasters instead. Not that I am promoting any form of red tape, but had some retail therapy this morning buying shiny and wooden things.

Our windows are at the back and can't be viewed by anyone, realise this is not much of an argument but CO doesn't have to live with the horrendous condensation running down every single window all winter. The windows and door are in the kitchen hence I am not keen on either secondary DG because I wanted ease of opening for ventilation or any kind of curtain arrangement. Oh well single glazed it is then.

Have you considered removable secondary DG? Fitted only for the winter months and then removed during the warmer weather when you can take full advantage of opening the windows during summer breezes. Storage during the summer might be a problem and it would be two new jobs each year, but I only mention it as an idea. All completely non-destructive and reversible, so shouldn't incur the wrath of your CO.

Ours on the hall window is removable, and comes off for the summer months. It goes into the back of the cart lodge till required again. I did try leaving it off, but by late October the cold and draught in the hall persuaded me.

Removable DG is quite easy to set up on a DIY basis using something like the Easyfix system:

The downside is that it isn't hugely attractive, but that's a subjective judgement that has to be weighed against the advantages.

I can't make up my mind about secondary DG. I agree it's not usually aesthetically wonderful, though a single large piece of glass can help by not obscuring the original window. I'm drawn towards something removeable because curtains are closed far more during the winter months and windows rarely opened whereas in summer the reverse is true.

So, while making up my mind I'm employing the age-old technique of prevarication and simply relying on curtains.
