You may want to consider a different style of pointing. eg weather struck and cut. As plastic pigeon has stated a darker mortar would look better. I've always found when doing repairs that a slightly darker shade is less obvious than one that is lighter.

Here's the results of recent efforts here. Wall had been previously repointed with sand and cement, but fortunately only very superficially, probably about 1/4" deep at most, so it comes out easily.

In this particular case the pointing has been done flush, allowed to go off for a couple of hours then "beaten back" - literally bashed hard repeatedly with a stiff bristled churn brush, which exposes the aggregate and gives the weathered stippled look, which will of course age in further with a bit of time & weather. The brickwork in the pictures has just been washed down with water and a light going over with a scrubbing brush after the pointing has gone off.

Mortar in this case is the premixed coloured mortar from Lime Green, colour "Tugford", regular grade (2mm aggregate). They do a coarse (3mm) and fine (1mm) aggregate version as well, I'll be using 1mm on the front of my house (better quality, closer jointed brickwork compared to the cheaper commons used on the rear elevation shown above).
