I (unfortunately) have six inches of concrete in the lower floor of my flat (lower two floors of a Georgian townhouse) and the DPC is visible below one of the exterior doors and along the front of a fireplace if you poke down a bit. It's also detailed in the 1975 planning application for the original flat conversion (which I found in the council archives).

Thanks Rogerh. Yesterday I took down the cladding from an exterior wall and removed all the skirtings. I found a thick polythene sheet was visible around 3 edges of the room (one exterior wall and two interior). No membrane apparent against the fourth wall, also interior, but there is a damp patch. In fact the mortar at the bottom of that wall is wet and crumbly. In one exterior corner the membrane appears to be damaged due to careless plumbing. The polythene along one interior wall was up behind the skirting about 6 inches and seemed wet behind. Does anyone know if it should have been laid up the wall like that?

In all seriousness it will depend on whether he is installing copper solder, compression or plastic snap-fit plumbing. It is also determined by how easy the access is - ie are you out of the house and the boards are easy to lift with a good cavity below, or is the access very limted and he needs to make safe each night. Are you happy to have visible pipework or does he need to conceal each run, etc.
It sounds like your job is not particularly straightforward, and so plumpbing in these circumstances can take a very long time. If you are at all unsure, why not get a second estimate/opinion?
Ljn – thank you. Would I be correct in my guess that any damp which is coming down from the chimney breast can be prevented by putting a layer of DPC around the top under the roof? I’ve read somewhere online that this can resolve the issue.
I' don't know how to solve "damp down the chimney issues". Maybe ask a the opinion of a roofer or someone who knows about chimneys.
