The idea of linseed oil is growing on me Michael, and I can see the blacksmith coating the nails to stop them from rusting.
I've just remembered something. I went to a well known lime product supplier to buy laths, and asked for some galvanized clout nails. I was told they no longer stocked them as they didn't sell a great deal, and had to throw what was left away as they'd gone rusty!
