Probably won't be long before only 'accredited conservation professionals' will be allowed to work on listed buildings . . .

Out of 27000 architects, only about 300 are on the "accredited" register. I'm not one of them and I don't intend to be. Some of those who are on, I wouldn't let within 100 miles of an old building, many of those who aren't on have years of experience and a great reputation.

What is the AABC?

The architects listed on this Register have all been assessed as to their individual knowledge and experience in conservation work by their peers in a team which also included a knowledgeable non-architect to ensure an element of public participation in the assessment process.

In the selection of an architect for a particular commission it is always important to have met the individual, know more about their experiences with similar projects, resources, personal qualities, managerial skills and reputation. It is normal for them to provide details of their practice and projects or assignments carried out and for a potential client to see the latter and make appropriate enquiries.

This register is compiled under the authority of ACCON Ltd trading as the AABC Register; Registrar: 11 Oakfield Road, Poynton, Cheshire SK12 1AR.

The Board of ACCON Ltd is unable to take responsibility for the outcome of any particular appointment.

There are two categories of entry. All architects have been assessed as individuals irrespective of whether they are entered as principals or otherwise. Two categories are indicated:

A - Architect knowledgeable and experienced in the conservation of historic buildings, engaged in executive direction of projects of conservation work.

CA - Architect knowledgeable and experienced in the conservation of historic buildings currently acting in a consultant, educational or advisory capacity.

Started off as a private enterprise, taken under the wing of the RIBA to give it some credibility.
