Late 1800 Farmhouse internal fittings?

Looking for a bit more information This time, staircases/bannisters. What style would have been originally used/sympathetic in a refurbish?

I was going to keep the current one for now, but its ugly and not in keeping at all.

There are walls either side of the staircase so maybe a hand rail would suffice?
