Lampshade making

Ladies! I need your help again.

Having just blown an undisclosable amount of my hard-earned on a pair of these:

which have been made to order and will be in the showroom for collection next week, I need to make some lampshades, using off-cuts of my yellow curtain silk (I was quoted £200 per shade if I provided my own fabric and declined!)

Should they look like the shade in the picture above? They will go on the bookcases on both sides of my mantlepiece and are quite a bit taller than the existing lamps (but will fit under the oil portaits above - I have checked!):

Where should I look for materials and instructions on how to make them? I am thinking of pleated yellow silk with a white silk lining and some trim.

you can buy your own lampshade making kits from places such as hobby craft and ebay as well as other good craft supply stores
hobby craft have online ordering so you could order over the net

They're fantastic! I think the pleated shade in the picture looks highly suitable, and would be good to copy. Do let us know how you get on and post pics of the finished thing!

I bet they smelt very pleasant when heated up by the lightbulb - or perhaps he got away with it by using new-fangled CFLs. :lol:

Oh, he'd have been too wrapped up in Marlene Dietrich and dancing the rumba with me to ever notice the smell of burning! Anyway, during summer he decamped to his "dacha" (a blue shed) in the garden and would puzzle everyone into thinking they had resident cuckoos with his tapes of birdsong. Ow, Martien, I miss him.

Umm I am so ignorant of these things I am not sure I understand the question. Do you mean the wire frame thingy that the fabric gets wrapped over? I would like one of these posh ones that needs a carrier fitted to the lamp first, but have not been able to find any yet.

I'm laughing at the memory of my neighbour, at the other end of the spectrum, who when he'd finished glooping the emulsion round the walls, slopped some over the lampshades too so they'd match!

:lol: :lol: :lol: What fun, we have some friends who had an eventing team in the `80`s the wife washed the husbands jodhpurs and they came out PINK ! The matter was resolved at the next event just before he went on the pink pants were painted with cream/ white emulsion ! They dines out on that one for years !

They dined out on that one for years !

Horsey folk can be a bit strange.
Mrs FF was a showjumper in her teens and (apparently, since I wasn't yet on the scene) a competition was held in one of her father's fields and he became concerned about the safety of the water jump. The solution was to rip up the dining room carpet and lay it in the bottom of the water jump so the horses wouldn't slip. Simple when you think about it.

I have just had an e-mail from Anne at ajlampshades. c.£10 for a frame or £50.50 plus VAT for making a shade from my own fabric. The suppliers of the lamps had quoted either £200 or £300 (I forget which, I was so shellshocked) per shade for making one to my spec.

Not much contest really - thanks for the great tip. I won't say that now means I can afford to buy some books I dont need!
