Kitchen floor decision time!

Modern life does tend to revolve around the kitchen, but I blame this on the general lack of staff these days. I'd much prefer to live in a house where I barely knew where the kitchen actually was, but barring a major win on the national lottery I can't see that ever happening.

But we do have bell-pushes in most rooms connected to a lovely old annunciator board, so we have the infrastructure in place just in case. :wink:

Having said that, since the new year, I've taken up baking bread and have been spending far too long in the kitchen. I've also discovered yet another reason why self-sufficiency hasn't caught on in a big way. I've long known that keeping hens is far more time-consuming and expensive than simply buying eggs and I'm now realising that bread making is much the same. :lol:

I'm sure purist bakers will say they are the work of the devil but have you investigated those machines where you put all the ingredients in and it gives you a loaf? I don't have one, but I have had bread made in one and it was very delicious. Not a lot of work either, my friend would set it up overnight and it was done in the morning.

Sorry to say I am a kitchen avoider. I like making stuff that stays made! If you sew a pretty scarf or make some jewellery you don't wake up the next day to find that pixies have disassembled it all and you have to clean up and then make it over again.

I so agree. I suspect we're similar in that our husbands work hard with long hours away from home and so we're mainly catering for ourselves, and who wants to cook in those circumstances? A packet of sushi is plenty good enough, though I don't suppose my Asda sushi compares to yours! And if I lived in Singers I don't think I'd ever cook anyway, the restaurants are so incredible.

I am now really fancying a thick buttered slice of FF's fresh lovely bread though...

Oooh no, that would never do. I much prefer the purist approach, though I'd hesitate to use the 'baker' tag just yet - I suspect it requires a ittle more experience than half a dozen loaves. :wink:

I suspect that there must be a psychological link between mixing lime and kneading dough! Both are equally therapeutic and I've been making nearly all the household bread for a couple of years now. Once you get into the swing of it, it really doesn't take long to make up a batch of dough. Like my lime mix for pointing, no two batches are ever quite the same and that is part of the joy!

And once the basic knack of handling dough is mastered there are then the joys of pizza, stromboli, flat-breads, soda breads, potato scones...
