Nigel, If it's just the PCB that goes, have you tried geting a refurbished ones? We had an ideal Isar that kept on going until I got refurbished one, they repaired with higher spec components than the manufacturers and it out lasted all the other bits thats started failing. It was about 20% the cost a new one as well.
If repairs are cheap enough and not too frequent, I would keep on nursing it through until it really needs replacing. It's not worth replacing just for the energy saving especially as a new boiler will need repairs as well after a years.
£800 for a flush I think you need a different plumber.
