NAS - an external hard drive connected via a LAN (Local Area network) and accessible by any PCs on that network.
RAID - A way of combining multiple hard drives to behave as a single hard drive. One method (there are others) uses two hard drives in a 'mirror' configuration so that data is duplicated across both drives, altough the PC only 'sees' a single drive. If one of the hard drives fails, data can still be accessed from the working drive. When the failed drive is replaced, it is automatically 'rebuilt' using data from the good drive.
RAID is very good for protecting against a hard drive failure, but it won't protect against files being accidentally deleted or corrupted (because both copies will be duly deleted or corrupted) or other disasters such as fire or theft, so backup copies are still advisable.
Macs may well be wonderful machines, but I'd still make backup copies of my 'stuff'.
Coincidentally, I had a call from a friend this morning in a bit of a state because his PC refuses to do anything except present the Blue Screen Of Death when switched on. I'm now in the process of making a recovery CD and will be spending the best part of this afternoon fixing his PC. Hopefully.

Thanks for the offer. I'm hoping it won't be necessary though, assuming it's a problem on the hard drive that can be fixed without necessitating a complete reinstallation of everything. I'm using BartPE (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BartPE) as the recovery toolkit.

I am very meticulous about keeping records of work done on ALL restored building
All I do is look at the cut scars on my body and will explain what I was doing at the time.
Before I die i will catalog all the scars with a description of their provenance, when I die they can hang my mummified skin somewhere and refer to it when required . No unreliable and energy wasting computers or discs required

I saw this thread and thought it was a about Planning matters. Am I the only one paranoid about having evidence of all our LBC changes and works done to show to a prospective buyer if we ever leave this place?
