Snap! (Although I suspect that mine is a somewhat more diminutive model than yours).

The flippin' recoil starter cord broke the other day. What a fiddly, frustrating job!

Which brings me neatly to replacing a broken fanbelt in the vacuum cleaner

Ooh yes - I have similar problems with mechanical jobs.

a game of Monopoly!

I'd class playing Monopoly as a a job I hate. really raises the ire. There are thousands upon thousands of better games to play. And Christmas is coming too:expect to see the hacks on the Sundays troll out the top ten of games to play over the holidays with Monopoly, scrabble, trivial pursuit, cluedo, ludo, then they start getting desperate: snake & ladders. GAH! and double GAH!

I've been meaning to write, for newspaper, a list of games you can play with the family that actually engage everyone and are fun.

I could go on. It annoys me that the general populous thinks that board game design ended 50 years ago.

Anyway: yes. Sanding down woodwork to apply the knotting solution the previous owners had failed to. The priming, sanding and painting all over again with something other than cheap white gloss. One door and frame down, seven more to go.

I agree with you on the Monopoly front (I was trying to make the point that I normally dread it, but it was better than cleaning gutters).

We also have Settlers of Catan, I can also recommend Axis & Allies (although takes forever).

Yep, me too!

Bleeding brakes has always been a job I hate, but at least on the Land Rover you can get underneath and get at the bleed nipples easier than on a car. And as for the starter motor, I once had an old Range Rover where I had to take the starter motor off at very regular intervals to free the jammed bendix, again a fairly easy task from underneath on the V8, but I suspect much more tricky on the more modern versions.

On my Triumph Spitfire, which suffered from the same recurring fault, I just had to put the car into gear and rock it backwards and forwards. The jammed Bendix gear popped back every time.

In my defence, it was a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away, where petrol was cheap and the mud was deep enough to swamp a Triumph Spitfire! Actually you can get quite a bit of movement going when rocking a Range Rover around, but I never did manage to free the Bendix that way.

Aaahh - Hawthorn-hating Matthew was clearly not wearing his PPE (Personal Protective Equipment)

Actually, I have a very good bit of PPE as used by railway workers, and the hawthorn spikes and brambles both fail to penetrate it. Unfortunately, but it is SO good (being designed for howling gales on the tracks on freezing nights) that I get overheated after only a few minutes work... :?

I have no idea why the brakes bleeding ended up in starter motor removal...!

No probs when I jacked the car up to bleed the brakes. When I came to start her up, all I got was turn-key-click-click-click. I did all the usual - checked battery, replaced battery, checked battery again, jumped her, roll-started her, whacked starter motor with summat 'eavy, identified where knuckles had been deposited in said whacking, rocked her back and forth in gear, swore, checked battery, replaced relays, bought new multimeter (this time with auto-power off!) and traced back for bad earth, tried starter motor and solenoid out of car with no probs, etc, etc

In the end I bought a new starter motor and solenoid from eBay for 90 quid. Still the bugg3r just clicked away.

Then for about the 19th I had the new starter motor out to check it outside of the car - when I put it back in she purred into life.

Must've been a bad earth - but it cost me a week, 90 quid and 7 knuckles and I still don't know what the problem was. :twisted: :twisted: :twisted:

On the plus side, you now have a spare starter motor, some spare relays and a spare multimeter.

And the knuckles will heal... one day.

Yes - we also have an MGTF with the same carp K-series engine as the Freelander, so the spare starter motor will come in handy... :roll:

I think in the 20 years that I was totally dependant on Land Rover products I probably had more problems with earth connections than with anything else. The good thing was that you normally only needed one jump lead!
