So this is what it looked like before - false wall in front of original fireplace, the strange hood, and the one bread oven on the right. Above the beam was plastered with a mesh of metal underneath to give a straight line at the top of the beam. [click on the pic to see the bread oven]
When the bread oven on the right was revealed it was obvious that the supporting bricks had been chopped away with an angle grinder and the original door way was lost. The large hole underneath that was filled in we decided was probably for the hot ashes. We have partially filled that in again as it was flipping cold [I will keep records for consequent owners etc, we have done nothing that can't be undone easily - thrown some stones in the back and then laid a stone wall and pointed it]. The 'floor' of this bread oven was also destroyed and filled with a mixture of cement and quarry tiles, so we just left them. Repair rather than renovate. I ordered a long steel to replicate what we found on the other side to hold the doorway up and then my builder [who LOVES brick] agreed to make it as simple as possible but still safe and so made a stone pillar up the left hand side to hold the steel and used what was still there on the right. Above the steel he inserted stones lengthways to stabilise the loose bricks in the bread oven roof after popping them back in with lime mortar. It's not perfect but it's way better than what was there before. Funds were running very low by this point.
This was almost how we found this oven. The builder was talking about building it up at the sides and across the top with stone but we like this rustic industrial look and persuaded him just to point it. Nothing else was done. It all needs a good clean and the lime brushing back a bit more but that will happen.
The important thing is we like it. Might not have any funds left for anything else now but at least one room will be brilliant.

Particularly considering that most people would have been quite happy with the fireplace you inherited.

Except of course it didn't work and was condemned anyway so they would have either had to have a non working fireplace for looks only or do something to mend the problem which would have involved most of the structural work we did anyway. But yes, I have had just one odd comment that it dominates the room and needs 'softening' now - each to their own, it would be a very dull world if everyone thought the same.
