Just daubed my first couple of panels.. (without poo 
) what nobody mentioned is, its the best fun.. like a combination of making mud pies and pottery Do you think theres any call for a freelance dauber in east anglia..? and on a more sensible note, is there any post daubing care i need to take as it dries out?

Gervase has hit the nail on the head... its used to make the mixture more impervious to oils, tars etc - so for eg., on a chimney, you can lime the interior, and it'll stop tars in the soot from attacking the brickwork and lime courses between. It also seems to have a ?damp-proofing effect? when used in mortar courses ..

I've seen it in mortar joints at low level on several occasions - the old boys must have used it for a reason...

Having spent more than my fair share of time in cow sh*t, I can't agree with the various comments suggesting that the smell is in any way unpleasant or that working with it would be distasteful, however each to his own!
Biff, when mixing straw into your mortar mix, do you chop it first? And if so, how short?
