This just one theory. Others state that this isn't the case and is flat (to within 2% anyway - latest WMAP survey results). I believe the general consensus is that the later though I'm sure somebody with a really powerful telescope will take a picture of the back of their own head at some stage to prove them wrong. (This is of course impossible). Some people think the universe is shaped like a doughnut (with an extra dimension sort of way).
