Well excuse me, but I would not have found this firm without the Internet. I would not have sent several hundreds of pounds of trade their way without the Internet. I've never been to the shop and for all I know they are an Internet firm. They have been cheaper than many others and their service has been faultless.

I shall now have to find an alternative Internet firm. Any suggestions?

Yes this effect has always existed but the ease of setting up on the internet and its price comparison ethos makes it far worse. We can't really see the consequence of our choices. You could argue the internet is getting on for the perfect market and hence hyper efficient but I think the low prices in the internet mask costs in the same way certain industries polute but often do not pay for it.

The internet now gives businesses the ability to cut their their own throats and those of their competitors much more quickly. I just feel that, as consumers, we are too ready to be morally outraged by someone charging more than someone else before making a true comparison that does not just take account of price.

A non internet example but I remember visiting a local shop who carried a vast range of malt whiskies with a friend who is a bit of an enthusiast. He marvelled at the range but then grumbled becuase he had seen one brand in Sainsburys for £5 less. Of course Sainsburys don't carry even a 10th of this shop's range and it was on offer for a limited period and then they stopped stocking it. I think my friend's reaction is pretty typical but my father's generation understood the economcis better. My friends reaction ultimately codemns us to a few of diageo's better known brands and life will be the poorer for it.

However, the upside of the internet are niche players who otherwise may not have been economic and I have sourced a lot of things on that basis over the net.

I second Penners' suggestion of Relics of Witney - they're located at the top of my road, really lovely and knowlegeable people who run it and I buy all my paint, ironmongery, etc in there. Definitely recommend them!
