Oh come now, don't be shy. I'll give you a challenge.

I'm 30-something, originally from a very rural part of Norfolk, teenage years in Cheshire, university in Birmingham, and have lived & worked in between times in Scotland, Liverpool, Sheffield, the Black Country, London, Hampshire and now Shropshire. I've worked in places where it's only me & about 300 Irishmen present, and the family background ranges from managing director to packing case maker.

My parents tell me that the Singing Postman was our postman for a short time when I was a nipper - although they lack evidence of that "amazing" claim to fame, funnily enough!

Born in Swindon, (a moonraker), grew up in rural Hampshire, university in Nottingam, then lived in Italy & Switzerland, followed by 5 years all over Scotland (Edinburgh, Fife, Aberdeen, Inverness & Greenock), and Cheshire and then finally North Wales for the past 5 years.

My jolly pucker Hampshire tones have been somewhat rounded of late! The kids though have Home Counties' vowels except for that unmistakeable North Walian/Scouse "u" as in "Moom" not "Muhm". Try as we might, we just can't beat it out of them!

Just to add a little more characterisation - you can picture me now popping off to my (5th ever) Tae Kwon Do class. Fed up of being beaten up by my 6 and 9 yr olds!

"Soft" and "lilting" are not something you could call my voice! No hint of Welsh I'm afraid, I'm generally pretty good at accents but if I try and do Welsh it deteriorates rapidly into a deeply politically-incorrect Peter Sellers-esque Pakistani accent, so I don't bother!

I'm just jealous I wasn't put down to be Hugh Grant, he might be a bit of a twit but he certainly seems popular with the laydees........

I'd love to have imposing Virginia Woolf tones, but that's how I imagine Schoolmarm! Still, you can continue to imagine me like that, Joce.

I suspect that a cottage would in fact be very high on 'stuff' - the previous owner of our farmhouse describes how it was when her mother-in-law owned it, and says that the whole 'back ktichen' was given over to stuff, so you only went in it to do a job - I remember she said there was an enormous copper, plus a ladder going up into the apple loft, plus various other things. The main kitchen had a range, of course, and a vast table. It also (I think) had a counter knocked through into the dairy so that you could work in the kitchen and stop to take people's payments when they came into the dairy, and a safe to take all this money hidden in the chimney.
Then they spent all their time in a small drafty living room, and there was a parlour for best that very rarely got used.
The windows looked out onto a farm yard, which did not involve sweet pretty chickens clucking round as I naively imagined, but a huge heap of coke / coal.

Thanks Phil for the book recommendation , just ordered English Cottage Interiors by Hugh Lander and Peter Rauter from amazon and looked at other listings of books on there and will order from library.

ooh no haster!, thats not something im going to tell my partner :lol: we are moving two households of "stuff" into one little cottage with very little storage space, other than the garage which i want to convert into my studio( stictly a no hoarding /storage zone!).. im struggling with resolve to declutter! dont want to be quite as authentic as you describe regarding "stuff".. sounds lovely though

lovely doors phil.
we seem to be leaning towards 3 plank doors at the moment.
will be hunting reclaim for a couple , and if not get some made up from reclaim boards.
is there any particular history/preference to the number of planks in doors that may have been used in victorian cottages i wonder?
