I will refrain from posting piccies of my beautiful ornamentals but I'm glad some of you are at last appreciating they aren't really chooks or chickens, but the feathered glory of the natural world, and the genius loci of the garden. :wink:

I'm afraid a cockerel is out of the question. I'm still on my neighbours Christmas card list. Also I saw the feature in the East Anglian Daily Times yesterday about the chap who got fined because his were too noisy.

He is indeed an amazing creature - quite desperate to fight for his wives, guard them when they're laying, round them up as a sheepdog does sheep, peck them when they fight eachother, find food for them and their chicks, and give up his life immediately when foxy comes. For these reasons Mother Nature decided that in each clutch of eggs the boys would outnumber the girls.

I thought I would lose Echo this summer to the horrid disease that killed her brother Narcissus. But Stymphalides took her and spent 6 weeks finding her the choicest worms and insects. Now, she's fat, bright-eyed and fully feathered. He goes crazy if you so much as walk in her greenhouse.

The picture shows the typical "enclosing" the boys do to the girls - get her up high, against a wall or fence, and put their bodies between her and danger (Stymphy's on the right, with Echo behind). So very sweet.

Toby - wise not to have boys if you have neighbours. They are generally not liked, though to me the sound is pure joy.
