Installing cast iron bedroom fireplace

Any tips on cleaning the inners up? Its sooty and a little rusted, the back of the fireplace is very rusted but I guess no one sees that.

Hi, a wire brush then liberal amounts of Grate Blacking. Theres a product called Hotspot I think and Liberon market an Iron Paste for the purpose.

Presumably the aluminium parts are 'for show only'. Aluminium burns at a fairly low temperature I think.

No, it's OK - 660 degrees to melt, 2000-ish to burn. Though I think for what I'll need they can go on non-functioning fireplaces anyway.

You are right Cubist but having read the website, it appears they take the pattern in aluminium and then use that to cast the parts in iron, so all appears well

Having had temperatures in excess of 700’C during a chimney fire I’ll stick with steel or cast iron personally
