Most builders have not much idea beyond modern materials. Ask them. Thay have no training and expertise in the use of traditional materials in traditional buildings.
They tend also to do whatever is most expedient in the short term - if the problems happen years down the line, well, that's tough.
As far as lenders are concerned - most places won't fall down (and they make you insure, which is another can of worms) just be damaged.
The damage you pay for to be rectified, not the lender.
