Thank you Xanthe. I will look into your rose suggestions, as I do want roses but haven't got them yet. JoseandChris recommended a beautiful rose variety called Lady Emma Hamilton, if I remember correctly.
I hadn't considered going for heritage varieties of plants. What a good idea, although, as you say, there might be some downsides. I am wanting lots of flowers and colour. My friend came shopping for plants with me. I was astounded at the expertise with which she carefully considered the positioning and suitability of each plant. I would have just bunged 'em in any old how. It's all planted up, but I'll post pictures next summer. It doesn't look like much now.
As for vegetables, I suppose I don't think of them as pretty, although clearly some are. Perhaps a tomato plant, or some beans, in the future. That's the thing with a garden. It's never finished. A blessing, as the six years of intensive house-renovations comes to an end: I will always have something to do.
