Show for the first time last night....... Now I wish I didn't bother......

I expect his Audi did more miles to the gallon than the landrover, so why is it better to use that? Even if he does have some biodiesel.......... and does biodiesel not add to the carbon problem? As they said.
Funny that to make it they have to burn gas to make it warmer to flow through the filters, then heat it with electricity for a night.......

It's just a tv show, blah blah.

I agree - a mish-mash of ideas, some of them rather odd.

For all we keep hearing about how Mrs GG is very, very green, she seems to do not a great deal to show this; rather she does a lot of wandering round in vaguely hippy mode looking bewildered.

The listed building stuff is interesting; I note that it has uPVC doors and windows (not very green - although I suppose replacing them with something better will only add to a landfill/pollution problem). Wonder if these were an unauthorised replacement for original?

The knocking holes everywhere without apparently any consideration of historic fabric and mention of listed building consent had us puzzled. Is there a Conservation Officer anywhere around?

The house looks a bit of a shambles, and the heating stuff with foil pipes running through rooms didn't exactly encourage anyone to consider it seriously as an acceptable method of heating.

Four wood burners - apparently fitted without any reference to the need (building regs) for a chimney liner - surely one large wood burner with a back boiler and rads in other rooms would have been more efficient? Or some external heating source - such as a hay or woodchip boiler? Plenty of outbuildings for those!

The house heating stuff was puzzling in other ways, too; the statement about the house being damp, and that heating was merely making the damp condense on the walls so that a whole house ventilation system was required was bizarre. Moaning about how cold the house is - well, if it has been allowed to stand with a leaky roof and no heating it will be damp until it dries out! And cold!

Maybe the render is cement, maybe the placcy windows don't open - but heating and ventilation and a 'breathing' building may have been more sensible for controlling any damp. Some of the render seemed to have been replaced - wonder if it is with cement? Wonder if the paint is limewash? Bet it isn't!

A pick and mix to make telly, which is hardly inspirational for others is it?

If you blinked you may have missed it but the architect did make the comment that these days we don't remove wood that has dry rot or use chemical treatments but concentrate on controlling the humidity. That was the most (only) important 10 seconds of the programme.

No, I didn't miss that - but it seemed to suggest that the dry rot didn't go away, only lay dormant waiting to strike if ever shock horror the humidity levels were raised... which wasn't too reassuring!

Bit garbled I thought.

But hey I've got my scarf wound round my head and searched out my dangly earrings, somewhere I must have a long print skirt and some sandals, the other half is busy collecting bits n bobs from heaps of scrap he hoards to invent things...

It's so easy to 'go green'!

Missed it unfortunately...

Bio Diesel DOES give off just as much CO2 as normal diesel, however it is no more than the crop absorbed from the atmosphere when growing and it's probably better to burn this than conventional fossil diesel and dump the waste fat in a landfill instead....

It's outright idiocy. The high humidity didn't cause the rot in the first place, the cause of the high humidity probably did. Like, for example, a leek in the roof.

That you could fix for less than £2.5K.

It must have been really wet to grow leeks in the roof.

But the point about not cutting out or poisoning dry rot is valid. The spores are everywhere and will grow if the wood is wet enough. They put a new roof on (all those imported slates) so that has probably dealt with the dry rot. But all those yards of shiny pipes were sooo televisual.#####ecology of course.

mm I have felt cross about this programme since the first episode I feel kind of 'used' as though my watching this programme funds this rather smug bunch in their playing at Eco lifestyle. I'm very happy for them but how much better it would have been to have actually made a programme that could help us mere mortals to learn ways of going green that we could actually use -If I live in a block of flats in London I'm hardly going to be inspired by some middleclass defence expert in an Audi trying to prove to me he's 'roughing it and teach me about home made Bio Diesel!! GRRRRR TV is rubbish apart from the sheer indulgence of Friese Greene last night - made me wistful for less complex times. End of moan back to work.......

He turned into a proper country bumpkin last night, as he swapped his Audio for a Landrover - that took all of 10 seconds to buy, wife said seats are more comfy than the audi, they drove off with it.... same sort of way people buy cars in Eastenders, no sorting out insurance, tax......

Dick Strawbridge was a Lt Col or summat in the Royal Signals. Highly thought of by those who know him, but mad as a box of mad frogs, allegedly. He seems to have retired after 22 years and turned to telly, previously seen on Scrapheap Challenge and Crafty Tricks of War. It seemed to be more a 'family relocate and bring a camera crew along to finance it, sell it with a trendy (if not very relevant) title'.
Still, more interesting than Phil & Kirsty or tonight's offering The Apprentice (Apprentice?! They're not apprentices, they don't make things, they can't make anything. Apprentices start with 3 months hand filing).

The flexible aluminium foil ducting was thoroughly carp. Should only be used on the final metre connection, big resistance and increases the fan's power consumption. Dick seemed happy with it. I thought he commented that the supply duct from the heat recovery system was warm and i nearly started shouting at the telly, but wasn't paying much attention by then. A shame it wasn't better explained, but TV audiences don't share our anorakky enthusiasms.

I think there's something on the CIBSE website about the damp problem, but it only applies to buildings with a big thermal mass and intermittent heating (churches). When you start the heating, it evaporates moisture from the adjacent damp walls and this condenses on the more distant & colder walls.

Poor little souls - one of them was cold in her little strappy top - come to my house dear, the strappy top is only the first of 4 layers when I'm doing the dinner in winter -Strappy top, T shirt, sweat shirt and jumper - plus a jacket if I'm not cooking anything in the oven.
I'd like to see them in a vicky terrace where sticking a pipe through a hole in the ceiling would bring the whole lot down and the chippy's closed so they couldn't make their bio-diesel either.
(and please, no-one take offence) but we called them poncy middle-class trendies.
And we won't watch them playing again.

Penny Poyser was much more relevant - at least she went into people's houses and showed them what could be done instantly and with a bit of thought. Much more inspiring because you could turn off your telly and go and do half a dozen things without relocating or spending any money or even changing your 'lifestyle'!
