I'm beginning to feel a little remorseful that I've not been leaving a trail of hidden artifacts during my various bits of work for future occupants to discover. I've been scrawling my name and the date but nothing else.

I'm not too bothered about any atropo po po thingummies (to coin a phrase from Joce) but things more of a 'time capsule' nature. What would be appropriate and interesting I wonder? A few old DVDs? A computer hard drive? A few lumps of coal to remind future historians what fossil fuels looked like? A small box of fishing flies perhaps?

Any suggestions?

We buried a time capsule under the floor slab in the new kitchen conversion. I stuck it in the hardcore under the main oversite so it will be uncovered only if someone demolishes the house or does an even more extreme rearrangement than we managed.

Inside the biscuit tin we put a current copy of the Guardian, a letter explaining who we are and what little we know about the house history and who lived in it. A copy of the before and after plans (so they know what we did and when) and a copy of the survey plan from the previous owners so they know what it looked like before that. My daughter also included a picture she'd drawn of the house and I think we put in a family photo too. We wrapped the whole thing in a John Lewis plastic carrier bag as we all know they'll last longer than the pyramids and it will indicate to the future archaeologists that we were nice middle class people

I resisted the temptation to scrawl "I will kill again" in red paint under the lining paper in the hall or under the pamment floor despite the obvious amusement value it wouldn't really be a legacy I'd want in case they tore the house apart looking for the fictional victims.

I have left time capsules encased in a sealed short length of drain pipe, usually in founadations or in the thicker section of old chimneys. Copy of newspaper, current approved plans and name of occupiers.
