Plots in Japan are numbered in order of increasing distance from the Imperial Palace or other local political landmark... No street names ever, just a series of names and numbers subdividing into ever smaller areas until you get down to an individual residence. We were Tokyo-to, Setagaya-ku, Akatsutsumi, 4, 17, 9. Exceptionally logical when looked at on a map, but impossible to navigate from A to B without assistance.
Slightly closer to the topic, our house was renamed I think in the 70's, its never had a number. The old name still appears in the PO database. Always been meaning to send myself a letter at the old name to see if it gets to us. The old name is closely tied to the locality so would be nice to reinstate it -- we are now named after a large town in Essex which isn't quite as appealing. But next door, who predate us and who divided their plot so that our house could be built, are F House whereas we used to be F Villa. Best left as it is methinks.
