I am generally too occupied with the creation of such things as reversible trumpets for cloud valances over goblet pleats, but if I ever encounter a nut again, I'll bear that in mind.

Just for future reference, if you have occasion to try and undo stuck nuts or bolts, give them a thorough soaking with good old WD40. Leave it for an hour or two, then repeat the process - do this several times. Then get a hefty spanner on the hex head and briefly try to tighten, rather than undo. Then try unscrewing.

Ditto to all that, plus I've found that a light tapping with a hammer can often help to unseize seized things. I assume it helps break up any rust and corrosion and helps the WD40 to penetrate - much like Penners' tighten-first trick I suspect.

I know that Penners is right about tightening the nut first, because that's what my grandad did. It works with screws, too.
