Just to add to Biff's comment above, during an idle moment a couple of weekends ago, I mixed some home-made lime putty with some very dry topsoil 1:3 (quite sandy hereabouts but had some compost a couple of years ago and the dumped out ash from last year's BBQs). It didn't mix very well and I added too much water (fluid off the top of the putty) and made a real sloppy mess. However having let it settle, I pushed the settled stuff into a piece of the wall that needed pointing and painted some onto the surface of one of the stones - just playing really.
The amazing thing is how well it has set and how well it matches the old original pointing! Wish I hadn't painted the stone as it was difficult to remove again with a wire brush, but shows it would have worked well as a coating. Also where I painted some into the loose mortar in the wall, it has firmed it up remarkably.
I guess this confirms the local-is-best trend and that 1:3 is much stronger than necessary.
