We've had major problems with Jackdaws and Crows in our chimneys before. Due to the size/shape of the chimneys it was tricky to fit a cowl. We ended up with a series of chimney cages...had to fit them 'proud' like this to enable sweeping of the chimney.

My Mother always told me that jackdaws used to fly down the chimney of the Nursery and sit on the end of my cot--- I can sort of remember that, and have not liked being near birds ever since. However, I do enjoy watching them through the windows.
