Holkhams - how to optimise drying time?

One thing I've noticed from Holkham's site which is new, though nothing to do with my problem - they now tell you to add Zinc Oxide to the first coat to stop mould growth, which isn't something they used to recommend so I'm guessing must be in response to some problems customers have had.

Interesting! I had the Holkhams paintwork on one window go impressively pink, which I assumed was some form of bacterial or fungal bloom. I put it down to not going back and doing more coats - it was one of these end-of-the-day, little-bit-of-paint-left-in-the-kettle, I'll-just-touch-this-up-while-I'm-here jobs, and it only ever got a single coat (until this week when again I had another little-bit-of-paint-left-in-the-kettle, I'll-just-touch-this-up-while-I'm-here moment!)

I think the mould issue rather depends on the wood. I don't bother with the zinc because oak, certainly heartwood oak that is all that is exposed on external joinery, does not support mould growth. With the redwoods, larch and Douglas and Pinus sylvestris, again there shouldn't be any problem if you are only painting heartwood but if there's any sapwood and it has a sufficient moisture content then mould could be an issue.

I'd agree that it is likely to be down to moisture content and in my case downright dampness in the wood. I got it on immediately-post-war pine which probably never was of the best quality (but can't have been too bad since it is now over 60 years old!) and the wood hadn't been prepared properly for painting, so hardly a reasonable test of product performance!

Perhaps if skier-hughes' career as a painter doesn't work out, Mrs S could pursue her singing career!

And perhaps my problem was trying to do it without the alcohol!
