Biffvernon... my stone Texas house is about 2,400 square feet, all electric, two stories, with very high ceilings. We run two heat pumps (for air conditioning) and a furnace, along with all the usual mod cons. My biggest bills come in July, August and September when the average daily outside temp can run over 100F daily during the entire 3 months. During those months I pay about £150 a month. During the cool months, when I don't use any AC and very little heat, it runs about £40/month. Those are my total energy bills, as we don't have gas or oil or any other energy source.
My house in Lowestoft is a 3 stories, 4 br, brick end terrace built about 1880. There is no extra insulation in the attic (plan to put some in this year). The windows are double pane UPvc. I have the (gas) heat on all during the winter to keep the house dry and protect the pipes, but at low temp (55F) Security lights are used inside since I'm not living in it then. My winter bills (Jan, Feb, March) are about £100/month.
I'm familiar with my mother's energy costs and my other UK relative's costs (after all, what do adults have to talk about, other than their shocking bills and taxes
) and it seems to me that the cost for energy is about the same. Some things are higher in the UK and some are cheaper..while other things are higher in the US and some are cheaper..in the end, it all works out pretty close.
It seems to me, while new built has higher energy R-factors, the walls are often thinner and the open layouts of modern houses need more heat/cooling to be comfortable. My old house has thicker walls, which act as heat sinks and cool and heat slower, which I think compensates for their lack of insulation. Once the older house warms up, it stays warm longer.
I'm sure that an engineer could come and tear my suppositions to pieces, but in the end, I know what my bills are and I really don't see my old Victorian pile as costing me much more to heat and cool than my new Texas farmhouse.
