Can I ask how easy it was to skim over the old plaster? I went on a Mike Wye lime course over the summer - he explained about plastering while the undercoat was still 'green' or otherwise the new plaster wouldn't stick to the walls....

I just opened up my fireplace too, to find a back boiler just as you did (no bath, though - how disappointing). What struck me about your pictures was just how tidy it all looked - I got the impression that mine had just been shovelled in! (without bothering to so much as have the chimney swept first - I had to get the sweep round, as I kept having soot cascading down the chimney onto my head every time I bashed something)

I will find out what mix he used and pass it on. I had grand visions of doing this job myself but having watched how nice of a finish and how fast the plasterers are, I'm really pleased to have passed it on. Think that job would have broken me....
Yes, there was plenty of soot to deal with when opening the fireplace. I have kept the copper back boiler, got a few ideas on its re use.

This seriously is the best idea I have ever seen!! I wonder how the listed building peeps would feel about me ripping out my bricks to recreate the bath in front of the fire with glass wine addition?

I know! My bathroom's freezing, and I've really thought about getting one of those freestanding tin bath thingies, and standing it in front of the fire. My Mum's even got one in her potting shed, but I don't think I could actually fit into it.

I don't want to criticize after you've done such a good job with the bath but that plaster in the background looks horribly as though he has skimmed your lime on lath with thistle or something else made from gypsum. Please tell me I'm wrong but, if I'm right, promise not to do it again. Doing (slow-setting) lime plaster yourself is much easier than plastering with the modern stuff which sets so quickly - that's how they can work so fast. Sadly, the vast majority of tradesmen (and I guess 98%) have no idea of how to treat an old property - they do the work with what they recommend, it looks good, they get paid and clear off, then a while later you get these cracks...

Too true, we definitely have the cracks at the moment, it's on the round to it list once we've done the roof, pointing, windows, bedrooms and bathrooms

Get the KitKats and tea out and lets have a planning session... Never does to rush these things (Pointing is underway at the moment, minor roof repairs should be next week while we have the scaffolding up)

Although I must admit that Dougs admission of using Aldis Kitkat clones is making me think about buying a packet next time I'm in there.

We are moving in this weekend! Not completely finished but close enough... Still need to take on lime washing the cellar walls and work on the exterior/yard. I know the kitchen is very non period property but there really was nothing original left pre 1960s there other than the back door that we have restored and come out really nice.
