I guess you have already tried the obvious answer of looking at old maps and asking local old timers?
If it is anything like ours it will be in the middle of the "yard" and right where it is impossible to bring back into use with out moving the garage...
Although we knew it was somewhere in the yard, we only found it after very heavy rain, when the water table dropped again and sucked the infill back down, opening up a small hole.
I'll need to look on-line but I remember coming across a site which had a "build-your-own-ground-penetrating-radar" section which looked like fun.
