The capping to overclad the fascia are normally 9mm

But wouldn't that be an 'overall' dimension? Given the weight consideration I would expect the structure to be cellular in cross section with walls circa 2mm or thereabouts.. The stuff I remember was merely a contoured sheet with a couple of 90 degree returns.

9mm is the thickness of the plastic. 2mm would be really thin. It's quite light to handle. If I had to use it I'd go for the 18mm solid.
