In my defence, I'm a graphic designer, and symbols are part of what I do. Part of my job is making sure designs have very clear messages, controlling things to limit misinterpretation, and 'unfortunateness'. So I'm oversensitive on the "Hey... that looks like a..." front.

Plus, I know a big kn*b when I see one. :lol:

Hi all, I havent been scared off, I have been flat out busy. I didnt get a chance to take pics last weekend as I was called out 3 times. I will be going over there again on sunday and will take loads of pics and post them via Photobucket.
And guess what, I have an orifice like that in my front garden, the council built the house right next to it, and when we bought it we didnt know about it until we began gardening, again pics of my hole will be on soon.

Righto here we go, pics are loading as I write this. The first one is of the long south face which shows the bulge behind the inglenook,

This is along the same wall showing how much of a bulge there is.

The same fire place inside.

And the bread oven still in place.

Here are some of the timbers on the north end, with an extension behind.

And the same end outside, with a soon to disapear glass house thing.

This is the main purlin running through the house on the ground floor. Note the joint with dowels.

It has some good original character left between the modernisation, the purlin you refer to is a floor beam, it has a stop chamfer typical of the 17th century.

The top picture shows a possibly curious difference in the stonework from one side to the other. The bulge (so large it needs its own roof extension) has several very large stones. To the left they are smaller and more regular, laid in clear courses. The stone wall on our house has all the large blocks at the bottom, which I imagine would be a lot easier than trying to hoist them up. Is it possible that the right and left halves were constructed at different times? A fascinating house.

Jasmine- I suspect jasminum officinale rather than trachelospermum jasminoides.

Whether it's a bulge or a change of direction is less important than whether it is stable or not. If there are no obvious signs of recent movement or cracking, or of recent repair, then it's probably nothing to worry about.

The mortar does appear to change colour around that point, though. Does it look recently repaired?

There's an interesting sag in the downstairs window lintel. But may have been like that for a-a-a-ges.

That's a nice, massive king joist, with lovely stopped chamfers. Is that a scarfed joint just to the right of the chamfer stop?
