Assuming it will play on your machine that is, but it's worth a go. The Trade Secrets isn't on again I don't think, but you're not missing much there - just an interior designer and an architect picking fault.

1805 was the date that EH approved for outside work. We have an etching from Whittakers Craven of the house from then, wonder what colours the windows would have been.

Probably white. The big range of rich colours didn't come in till a bit later -maybe 1820s or 30s I think.

How fantastic was that programme! Quite often watch it and wonder what on earth people are up to, but what you have done is breathtaking. Well done both of you. Was right on the edge of my seat during the ads when it was mentioned you might have to sell up due to lack of funds, so pleased that's not the case.

How wonderful, what an inspiration for the rest of us. I thought the work we have to do on our house was major but after seeing GD last night, its nothing in comparison. We did get a bit worried at 9.55pm as we thought the programme finished at 10pm, what a relief to see another 35 mins. Congratulations.

What a amazing restoration! Do have to agree with the comments on the Trade Secrets bit which didn't seem have any secrets and 2 designers who personally I don't think should have been there.

What an amazing project - we are an architectural practice in Cheshire, and the programme was the one topic of conversation at coffee break the following morning. The building really looked too far gone to have been possible to restore, and we're amazed that you actually managed it - and managed it so beautifully - congratulations.

In passing, our comment on the More4 programme which followed was that it was a complete waste of time, haven't heard such drivel for a long time. Better to have just left it to crumble to a pile of stones? What planet was she from?

But we have a question! As we're in the same game as Francis, we know just how much research, design, specification and supervision work needs to be put into the restoration of old buildings, and it was very apparent from the programme how much architectural work Francis had to put in. So the question is, did he actually make a record of the time he'd expended on the project (taking out the DIY bit) and put a figure on what that would have been if his practice had provided the service for a Client? And, if so, what percentage of the final contract cost would he have had to have charged?

p.s. Sorry to those finding this also in 'New Topics' - my very first entry into the discussion forum and I posted it in the wrong place!

Sadly missed the lot...don't have a telly, but I gave up on GD very early on as there was never any detail or real inspiration, budgets or help for budding designers and self builders. OK maybe it's entertainment, but at least the magazine should be able to follow up and be a damn good read instead pics of K and damned useless adverts. I even subscribed for the first 6 months...rubbish, no inspiration at all. Agree with Biff.
There is still a huge gap in the market for some sort of journal/ mag full of ways to prepare yourself and approach design, planning, looking at character, respect etc etc.

BTW That sequence of spaces and the staircase in Lindisfarne is quite magical...definitely worth a visit, especially at quiet times. If curious take a look at the planning of Baillie Scott, wonderful...arts and crafts? superb...you need look no further for inspiration.

I loved watching it as it is comparatively near my humble abode, and what miracles you've wrought, but the mysterious thing that happened to me was that my other half showed me another half-ruined peel tower outside Hellifield with a farmhouse sort of attached and told me that was Hellifield Peel ... he's admitted he was mistaken, but I wasn't seeing things.

Yes - agree entirely about GD magazine. I think it used to be better, but has now gone just as caliwag says.
AND I agree re. Baillie Scott. Blackwell, in our neck of the woods, is about the most beautiful and inspiring house I know.

Many many years ago I got stuck in the sands off the causeway

The sand was very firm and we were having great fun skidding around . . . until we hit the only bit of soft sand for miles, or so it seemed, and buried the car up to the axles. Luckily the tide was nowhere near coming in, so I left my wife in the car and hitched a lift to the nearest garage to get a tow-truck to pull us out. It took all my powers of persuasion to convince the driver that the sand really was firm enough to support his truck and he eventually drove the few hundred yards to our stricken car and towed us out with ease. There was quite a crowd of onlookers taking photos by the time we got back to the road, which was somewhat embarrassing.

Fortunately, a few slow drives through a nearby ford soon cleared all the sand from the wheels and brakes and all was well, so I didn't need to invent any excuses for our company fleet manager

What about writing to the various TV channels re their listings for locations, sending pictures and details etc. You could phone in the first instance. They need locations like yours for all the filming they do, likewise film companies. I know for a fact they pay quite well.
