Solid fuel based CH just takes a bit of planning / adjustment to get used to but can work perfectly well, and in the next 6 - 8 months will save you a lot of money (barring significant energy market reform)

If you are thinking of getting a new “system” and are going to insulate the wotsits out of the place as you renovate then a “fresh” install of a ground source heat pump or air source heat pumps based system would be strongly worth considering with the way the world is headed

Interesting @BlindPete - did the windows used to be taller / have seats?

I’m unsure of how the windows used to be but it does look like possible window seats. The window to the right looks like it’s been made wider too. Old buildings are always full of surprise!

Ours is currently a log burner that heats the rads, and while is does get the house warm. (although not got a rad in bedrooms, which is just daft), I find keeping it goes all day is hard work.

I'm not entirely sure the cost is cheaper than gas CH, the prices of coal have become daft too.

63F and we're OK, 62F we might or might not....

I find keeping it goes all day is hard work.

After literally years of practice with ours I cannot claim any particular expertise but the critical goals I keep in mind are: -

1. Get the stove up to temp as soon as possible and don't be tempted to throttle it back too much until 'all' the water in the CH system has been circulated at least a couple of times.
2. Damp the burn back to a very slow roll/smoulder, barely any flames, and the CH pump kicks in say once every 30-40 minutes.
3. Don't let the fire go out over-night - put a couple of logs on and get them burning well then damp it back to a smoulder and leave it alone - my aim here is to not let the fire go out and thus losing the the heat stored in the body of the stove and that stored in the CH water system.
4. Don't worry about the sooty deposits on the glass doors - they are almost unavoidable with CH equipped stoves.

Do you use just logs, or coal too?. We use mainly coal as it seems to last longer and cheaper in the long run

Logs, mostly hardwoods as the denser timber burns more slowly when properly seasoned. I've used coal on a couple of occasions in the dim and distant past but always felt it was a poor choice for us.

Hmm, maybe I willn, have a whirl with logs. Not really trialled it for a long period of time

Gas system boiler, radiators throughout, with a pressurised hot water cylinder. All put in just under 2 years ago, with a smart heating control system - so every room is individually controlled for both timing & temperature. All works well, powerful hot showers are a nice bonus!
