I wonder what the Nigel in that photograph would have thought

I might have looked rather different but I didnt really feel different. Not much more than a year after growing the beard I shaved it off, got a short haircut and joined the university Officer Training Corps, Royal Engineers' Wing. The main objective of this move was to be able to attend the annual explosives training weekend which was as fun as it sounds - blowing lots of things up with plastic explosive in the middle of a remote Army training area, an experience I shared with a young and rather shy law student from Christ's College with some strange political views called Nick Griffin.

I feel I am a Catfish Rising on Rock Island without an Aqualung, trampled by Heavy Horses; a War Child in a Passion Play, caught between the Broadsword and the Beast, Under Wraps, on the Crest of a Knave. This was A Stand Up! Wasn't I just the Minstrel in the Gallery on Stormwatch?

Although it might look like I was into glam rock in 1977 it wasn't so. Until I Googled them just now I had a vague notion that Jethro Tull was someone who lived in Ambridge. Even in my bearded state I remained very much a classical music devotee and regularly attended evensong at St John's and King's to admire the architecture, the choristers and their wonderful singing.

My hirsute appearance was the result of simply not shaving or going to a barber. I never saw the point of having a beard AND shaving as Peter Sutcliffe appears to have done.
