We have just found out that there used to be an opening for smoking hams in chimney stack of our very large back to back fireplaces. This was situated in what is now a first floor bedroom above one of these fireplaces.
Does anybody have any idea of what these would have looked like or any more detail on these? Apparently there are beams within the stack to support the meat (which is slightly worrying from a fire risk perspective). The stack is huge even at first floor level, measuring around 12'x10' at this point.
We do not have any intentions of uncovering this (not very practical in a child's bedroom) but it sounds fascinating.
The house is listed as 17c but the previous occupant says that this part of the house is 14c, if that helps.
