What about wood?
We have cast iron downpipes but wooden gutters. (as doo all the houses in this area that havent been plasticised)
I was thinking of lining the replacements with copper to increase their life span.

Elm, not much of it about these days, is the traditional timber for gutters as it is relatively durable and stable in wetting and drying cycles. Teak would be ideal except that it ought to stay in the Third World and we really shouldn't be using it here. Oak will do if you choose it carefully - no sapwood, atraight grain, no shakes. and get the detailing right to cope with movement. I guess it might last longer than plastic.

These are just cheap softwood I think. All the local timber merchants sell it as a standard profile. But they arent usually lined.
I cant seem to find a picture on line so I will have to take one tomorrow when the sun comes out (yeah right!)
For mine I was thinking of making an oak channel (out of 3 bits screwed and glued) then lining with a single strip of copper and soldering/welding in the down pipe section...
With this I reckoned I could get away without painting them or doing much more than clearing them once in a while...

I dont think it is even cedar, just pine.

That link takes you to a wooden gutter made of Douglas fir, which is another pretty durable timber, and it's been preesure treated with pentachlrophenol though it would last a long time without.

Sorry for the thread resurrection, but looking into guttering atm, I'm considering wooden guttering. But am open to plastic if the cost is too prohibitive (we're not in a listed property).
A visit to my local wood yard revealed that they do indeed sell them, and treated (tanalised I think, as its very green looking). However, the following conversation was a bit worrying:
Me: What sort of wood it is?
Him: Its outdoor grade.
Me: Right.
Him: Its treated, so it won't rot.
Me: But what sort of wood it is? Is it pine? [trying to give him a chance]
Him: It came from a tree!

I forgot to mention, last year I went to the same place looking for some nuts for an old door fitting. They have a few hardware items tooked away in various draws, so I was hopeful. Behold the following conversation that ensued:
Me: Do you have a some 1/4" nuts please?
Him: Yes, here go... 6mm nuts.
Me: No, I'm after 1/4"
Him: Yes, its the same size.
Me: No, I'm after 1/4" Whitworth nuts. Its a similar size, but a different thread.
Him: I've never heard of Whitworth. But 6mm is the same size as 1/4", I'm sure it will be fine.
Me: No, really, it won't fit on a 1/4" bolt.
Him: Oh, OK, sorry then no we don't.

Wooden guttering is very expensive. I have the bill for ours, which was a bespoke piece of joinery for the previous owner in 1985. £3750, but it's held out very well- it's chestnut. The design matches the original, which was made of oak, and which had rotted away. Remaining fragments of it have been used decoratively throughout the house.
