You, shy? I find it hard to fathom, all this shyness. It's not as if anyone's going to say "I HATE that wallpaper, that hinge", and if they do, so what?

I can understand people being a bit reticent about their modernisation, but we are all very sensitive and aware about that issue I hope. I think for the most part we'd all agree that if there is minimal, or no, loss of historic fabric, what does it matter about a modern kitchen, an unobtrusive extension?

I get the feeling from some of my private correspondance from regular posters that they don't think it's appropriate to show off some of their work if it's not in the category of this- was-a-cement-room-and-now-it's-a-lime-room, and I think that's a real shame.

Here here, splendid job 11/10. Strangely I was at a friends house earlier who has a similarly proportioned rail over his front door and it looks good there too. You can soon buy a van and start your own business there is I believe a market for female skilled craftspeople who find a lot of work working for female clients who cant trust bulls***ing male traders!!

(not that we males all fit that description of course but sadly there is an element which lets the side down)

I'm so glad the pole looks ok, Joce. I've always thought that the thin poles that seem to be the norm these days just don't look right supporting long luxurious curtains. In houses with high ceilings and tall windows I think one needs something pretty substantial to create a sense of balance.
Which leads me to the question: has any research been done into the history and development of curtain fittings?

We used to allow our baby to sleep in a cot.

When I were a lad we had the floor to sleep on and were grateful, times were hard but we were happy, etc etc etc.....

Joce, the room looks great. If I am being totally honest, it's not my taste. But it's your room, not mine, which is what I would say to anyone else who has fear of posting things up. You've clearly done a lot of work, to a good standard, and have ended up with a room with which you are rightly proud and which goes very nicely with the age and feel of your house.

Anyway, I can't post up any pictures of beautifully finished rooms as, erm, I've only done one..... And that's one of the kid's rooms - yellow walls with huge cartoons of jungle animals on isn't very period really is it?

The posh hotel near the forum where we had our dinner (no minister in the end but we did get a.Nobel laureate) had an unplastered brick vaullted ceiling, and very nice it looked too.

I passed what looked like a shop selling busts near the hotel. I am chairing a session of the conference tomorrow morning - if I do this efficiently I might be able to make some shopping tiime!

Well I have shown you mine, now you have shown me yours. What a good job you have done thank's for sharing. I can only hope that this sort of thing can encourage others who feel a bit nervous about having a go.

Just remember, I started 20 years ago but not full time with the full view of showcasing what is possible to do with a wreck of an historic building and still have nothing more than oodles of practical experience have won local, regional and national awards. With the standard of this sort of work turning up I am glad I got in early as I am sure enthusiastic people like you Joce and many other members of the forum will soon be giving me a run for my money.

It's great that we don't all like the same thing, how boring would it be if we did? And I'd love to see your kids' rooms!

Dave - the wallpaper was £8 a roll in the Laura Ashley sale, now discontinued. Actually the wallpaper and curtain fabric were a moving in gift from Mum and Dad, though I chose them. The paint (F &B) was free from Homebase with my Nectar points. All the work was done by us. So the only cost (excepting furnishings) was the cornice and rose- about £200.

The floor of an upstairs bathroom at either Felbrigg, Blickling or Chicheley Hall --( I cannot for the life of me remember which one) has a printed lino, depicting Kate Greenaway scenes.I presume it to be a late Victorian floorcovering. Childrens room were always decorated in some way or another.

I'm glad to hear that. No historical accuracy aimed for in my decorating though, just what we thought the kids would like!

Yes, it's painted matt black - really it needs stripping and polishing.

It's the only original fireplace left in the house.....

But, I have got a matching but broken one, in several pieces, found in the cellar & attic & garage! I reckon I can repair it. And I have got another matching one that I found on Ebay - much larger, which is destined to replace the cheap pine 1980's effort in our dining room.

My 14 year-old son's second floor bedroom, done when he was about six:

Cupboard was designed by our architect, carcase was made by a carpenter and I made and decorated the cupboard doors and drawer fronts.
