One of my colleagues of very long standing at my school once confided in me that whe he wrote out his teaching application letter, he had to inform about any positions of responsibility previously held. He put "I was milk monitor at school". It worked!

The other day I saw a repeat of Dan Cruikshank's programme about Hardwick Hall (with some surprising information about the great Bess of) which showed some of the interior of the old hall (by which I mean the one that's now in ruins). Most of these interior walls looked very like yours, Jacqy - very well-laid stone; but there were some surprisingly large areas of well-preserved original, very elaborate, plasterwork.
Nothing to do with worktops, of course, but what's a bit of thread-crossing between friends, eh?

Well, if there was ever any plasterwork in my house, elaborate or otherwise, someone did a mighty job of ridding the house of every last scrap....and it wasn't me!!

Your kitchen looks great. Can I be a stone pedant and say that almost no stone worktops are true "Granites". Especially black ones.

You can be what you like. I'm not here to tell people how to behave or what to do I don't know the name it's given. My stonemason brought some samples and I picked the one I wanted. However, he's coming back soon to do some carving in the front doorway, to accommodate the bolts the blacksmith is making, so I'll ask him when he gets here

The article this links to may help explain what I meant. If your supplier gives you the correct trade name then you can tell where in the world it is from. To me it is just as interesting as it is to others on this forum who want to be clear about timber types and origins. Its a fascinating sign of our times that we are all filling our kitchens (me included) with highly polished, incredibly ancient stones, some with drainage grooves! Tony Robinsons descendants will dig them up in a future version of time team and probably claim we were all using sacraficial temples in our homes in the early 3rd Millenia. (ah.. the temple of Nigella :wink: )
