Granite and Oak worktops going in

Had a flurry of activity today with the stonemason and the joiner. Had the Oak worktop delivered by the joiner, which needs 5 coats of wax underneath before it's fitted, and the stonemason started to fit the granite worktops with upstands. These have made such a difference; a real transformation. I'm really pleased with them.

Looking good. Our oak worktop had it's last coat of oil and is ready to be used tomorrow!!!!!!!

I love it. Looks wonderful, particularly the oak doors with black brackets. Did you just get a local joiner to make the carcases and doors or buy the carcases and have the doors and frames made to fit? Please post more pics when all finished!

There are no carcasses. Most of the doors hang on frames fixed into the brick. However, the doors which are going in front of the washer and dishwasher (the ones without hinges on them in the pic)will be hanging directly on the front of the brick; I'm just waiting for the blacksmith to make the hinges for these. The guy who does the woodwork for me is a friend who lives locally. I keep referring to him as my 'joiner' but he is, in fact, a cabinet maker I just tell him what I want and he turns up with it

Ah, see my other thread. The jury is still out on this one, although I think I'm going to go down the oil route now rather than wax. I'm just waiting for people's opinions.

Well, here's the granite in around the Rayburn. I have to admit, it doesn't look great on the picture but black is notoriously bad to photograph. In reality it's fabulous but here, it just looks like a black blob!! :roll:

Your kitchen looks great. Can I be a stone pedant and say that almost no stone worktops are true "Granites". Especially black ones. If you know the trade name you bought it as i can probably tell you its true name geological age and world origin.
When we did our stone tops I asked if there were any suppliers using UK sourced stone and was given the following answer. " Well sir, you see you cant get granite worktops from this counrty as there isn't any Granite in Britain" He did not know I was a Geology Teacher and I just bit my lip and stopped myself asking if he had ever been to Scotland, The Lakes, Dartmoor etc etc!

The other day I saw a repeat of Dan Cruikshank's programme about Hardwick Hall (with some surprising information about the great Bess of) which showed some of the interior of the old hall (by which I mean the one that's now in ruins). Most of these interior walls looked very like yours, Jacqy - very well-laid stone; but there were some surprisingly large areas of well-preserved original, very elaborate, plasterwork.
Nothing to do with worktops, of course, but what's a bit of thread-crossing between friends, eh?

Thinking about it, a stone pedant could be handy sometimes - to stand on if you cant reach something.
