Gilding & traditional paint finishes

I have just engaged the services of a local craftswoman here in Norfolk who specialises in oil and water gilding as well as paint analysis, conservation etc.

She managed to identify that one of our Regency overmantel mirrors (which is currently painted white, has under all of the coats of paint, previously been gilded).

We also plan to have a very ornate fire surround analysed to see what colours/finishes were used originally.

It's so refreshing to find someone out this way who has a skill like this - I'd love to share her website with those interested. I understand the sensitivity to advertising, so please message me for details

During a recent visit to have a look at a mirror frame we are having gilded, she also noticed the tiniest chip on a corbel in the fire surround and beneath that, the original gilding...eyes of a hawk!

Makes you wonder how someone could have ever slapped some paint over the gilding in the first place
