One of the things (it sems to me anyway) is that most period properties in magazines and museums are just over done - very fancy stuff in every room, carpets, curtains, glam furniture, etc.
Very true...and, to add, most people didn't live in a house that was 100% new in both furnishings and style. My terrace was built about 1880 and I plan to renovate it in period style...but that means I could replacing a 1970's fireplace surround with anything from 1850's to 1910's and still be happily authentic. If the original owners weren't new millionaires, they surely had old furniture and fixtures they could have brought in, and once they did, they surely added and changed out stuff over the years.
I think it's more important to look at the "bones" of the house and be true to it, when you're looking at decorating.
That's why I'm working with a date and style range.

I like tim's book a lot (and certainly fondly imagine the same chartaer in my crap old ruin), but not sure I fully approve of his quite so carefully arranged "oldness". He ripped out a load of old Victorian stuff to get that authentic Georgian originality after all :wink:
However, all the work he has done with Spitalfields is great. I believe they are even funding some of the work at Sheppey that was in Cormerstone this month.

Well it gives some support to those of us who live in wrecks... and who have sort of ground to a halt...
I think that at times ripping out can have some reason, it all depends on the building. It's a contentious issue I agree.
