That looks really good. For a purely decorative grate it’s worth checking e.bay or FB marketplace, people get rid of all sorts of things and often for not much £. We picked up a very useful one nearby, the guy just wanted it gone as it was a heavy beast and he no longer wanted it.

It was blocked up and plastered over with no air vent , just a pepper pot on the chimney top. There was no damp in the chimney and didn’t smell. I have now opened up the fire place & blocked the chimney off with a metal plate plus a layer of sound deadening insulation (stops the wind / road noise) . It’s quite high up inside the stack so I’m hoping it stays dry again, if not I will put a vent in. Will leave it a while before I open it up and inspect it again but so far so good.

I need to do something similar and would be grateful for clarification. In terms of the metal plate would it sit in the opening that leads to the chimney flue? I have take a picture of my fireplace camera facing upto the chimney flue?

Can you please expand on the type/make of insulation used and am I correct in thinking the order of installment- insulation first and then the metal plate?
