I've tried both boiled and raw, and the boiled seems 'stickier', so that's what I've stuck with.

Do a Google search on "lime wash", that, uses raw linseed oil to water proof it. Putty is chalkdust and linseed oil. As far as I can make out "boiled" linsed oil is for wood, so garden chairs are not sticky for weeks on end. The raw seems to be the one for augmenting the weather proofing of lime.
I believe the finest grade of sand is "silver" sand, sold for sand pits.
