Frustrated with Kling Strip

OK, so I've applied the Kling strip according to the instructions, left it for 2 days, and yet still there doesn't seem to have been much of an effect. Sure, the paint has lifted a little, but it's a long way off being ready to remove.

The beam seems to be painted in a chalky, black emulsion, reasonably thick. Any ideas where I've gone wrong anyone? Should it be left on even longer? Thanks!

How thick did you apply it?
Did you cover it once left?
Was it still moist when you took it off?

The thicker the paint the thicker the klingstrip should be.
It should be covered with plastic.
It should be, once dried out it stops being effective.

we re in the middle of stripping a room full of beams left it on for a few days, we were really disspointed with the result, the beams were still black :roll: so we tried cleaning with water and a scrubbing brush, and the black has gone , putting the KS was the easy part, cleaning the beams is dirty, messy and very wet, we also bought the pressure washer attachment, works great on square flat beams, dont know why they havent made different size attachements.

Good point, the instructions say to wash it off, but we shouldn't assume that it was done

no I've been washing it off - trying to. I can't seem to get through to wood though - just rivers of black run off. I did cover it with plastic, I put it on reasonably thick, but it did seem to have dried out a bit. Was the pressure washer kit the one from Strippers? Did that make the job a lot easier? Should you be able to "peel" a lot of the paint off with the Kilng Strip? Don't know what to do next really - in a right mess.

If the Kling strip seems impossible, would it be detrimental to then try a solvent stripper? What's the alternatives - sandblasting? I just hate the black painted finish. Reminds of a fake country pub!

The paint may only be softened, but just enough to remove it, most important is to get the kling strip off before it hardens. You really do need a low volume/pressure hot washer (Doff) to get it off and remove any softened paint/coatings and see whats left. will either need another go or a different method. Just shout if you need more info.

A pressure washer is infinitely easier, but without knowing how many layers of paint adn how thck the kling strip it's hard to say whether you need more elbow grease with your scrubbing and washing - you need lots of water - or if you need to re-apply the kling strip.

They say up to 10mm thick for really thick layered paint.

By your rivers of black though it sounds like more washing is in order,a s you need to wash until the water is clear.

Well,, not very impressed with the results using Kling Strip, although I concede that perhaps my technique was to blame rather than the product. Who knows. Tried Nitromors on a small patch- no better. Looking at sand blasting or having a black inglenook beam.

No, no, a thousand times, no.

Sandblasting can do terrible things to old beams, removing the patina, softening or destroying any mouldings or tooling details and eroding out the softer interannular material. You can end up with beams that look like driftwood.

NEVER EVER sandblast a beam.

I had some stone work blasted, and the guy in the diver suit wandered a little on to the edge of a fireplace beam. The top inch looks like, well, driftwood. Devoid of colour, texture and patina.

Yuk. Fortunately it is going to be covered by the plaster on the ceiling.

I think it's one of those jobs that you just can't hurry. There's no 'instant fix' here, and it will take time (how long did your beams take, Graham?) but the satisfaction at the end will be enormous.

about 2 days per 3 beams with the washer, about 4 hours to put the klingstrip on and all day to clean 3 beams, followed by the inevitable picking out of worm holes and cracks etc in the wood followed by another good wash down.

That section in the picture was about 2 full days work.

The satisfaction is enormous.

Just for clarification, he's talking about my daughter, not me. Nobody in their wildest nightmare would ever mistake me for a "Miss" (or "little").

But yes, daughter and husband have done a fantastic job on their beams with Klingstrip. Best part of two years' work, and infinite patience, have been well rewarded.

Crikey, I guess I touched a raw nerve there. So sandblasting is to be avoided then. The thing is, that upon washing there was just endless, non stop, thick black run off but no sign of any original wood beneath it. I'd left the product on for a good 2 days, and then washed and scrubbed at an area of about 10cm square for what seemed like forever, and still no results! Just thick black run off. How can you tell if the paint is blackboard paint? Would that react differently to the Kling Strip?

In your shoes, I think I would give Strippers of Sudbury (who make Klingstrip) a call. Explain exactly what's happening and ask them whether they would recommend you to continue with the Klingstrip you're using, or switch to one of their different formulations. They have a number of different ones for different paints.
