You should (he said hopefully!) be able to edit your bookmarks to remove phantom :80 accretions. It's not exactly necessary, given that the port for http: is 80 anyway.

There is an "alternative" port 8080, used for some specialist stuff, but that shouldn't be needed for the forum either.

- or seems to be, in Firefox and Chrome on my PC, in Mercury on my iPhone, and in Chrome and Safari on my iPad.

It's worth checking the address you are using for the forum doesn't start in https, and has the www bit. If you have the https bookmarked then the forum will work slowly and some pages will not be displayed especially after posting. Change the bookmark to http. Also following links from Google will often give you the https version.

Oooooooooooooooooh you are clever. I've no idea what you're on about but I edited the bookmark to remove the S and saved it, deleted the previous one, and it works :shock: I can see the pics again. Ha ha ho ho. Thankyou.

That's what I do in the address window, when I click on an email link. If, instead I use PPUK bookmark, I then have to check all the threads that I've been following to find the one I want.

It's all rather a faff.

Glad that's sorted. The https thing is a problem Google introduced. In the past we threw websites onto the webernet any old how, people would find them and bookmark them and all was fine. Recently Google decided it would be lovely if the whole internet was a bit more spy proof and changed their listings from http to https (the 's' means the communication to the website is encrypted).

This site works a bit in https but gives errors as you found, but it is the version that guests and potential new members will be directed to by Google. In case Simon looks at the website ideally a frig would be made in .htaccess to redirect the https version to the http version.

I've got a timber round here somewhere. Day to day I use Firefox cos it's friendly and behaves well. It's not owned by any of those firms that are out to market me...

No need to worry Moo. As kreyszig says, it's just Google scanning every page it can find on the web to build an index of what's out there. Without such a thing, searching for all the information in cyberspace would be pretty much impossible. I expect the 'bot' (a piece of automated computer software) has visited us many times in the past and will continue to do so in the future.

I'm sure the bot wasn't listed as a visitor when I checked the forum last night, but I notice it's back again today.

Perhaps we're just really, really interesting to cyberbots?


Edit: after posting this, the visitors list was just me and 2 guests with not a bot in sight, so I suspect they just dip in and out like the rest of us.
