Forum Changes

I have noticed recently that the forum colours seem to have changed slightly - possibly a bit paler, and the black is less black? This might just be my screen, of course, but I have just noticed that the bit on the right of all posts has changed: there used to be a few things under my name and location which included a blue spot which gave a link to my blog. This has now gone, so any post where I have referred someone to the "blue spot on the right" will seem a bit puzzling!

Has anyone noticed any other changes?

If you click the 'contact' icon on RHS the blue dot appears as an option. Haven't tested if it goes to your blog ...

Yes, it is paler, and the Quote has been replaced by a couple of tadpoles.

But I still can't see photographs, sigh, and after I make a post I still get This Page Can't Be Displayed.
Neither of these 'features' affect other fora.

These changes all date back a few weeks to when Simon changed to a new hosting company for the site.

These changes actually date back to last weekend (Sun 12th July) when we successfully upgraded the software that supports the PPUK discussion forum.
It was at version 3.0.12. It is now at the latest version 3.1.5

There are a number of improvements with the software upgrade (apart from a few new icons and colour tweaks). Probably the most compelling is that the new theme is 'responsive' which means that the PPUK dicussion forum can be viewed properly on a mobile phone! (The crowd applauds!!)

I'm part of the teams running several other forums like this. We changed one to this new version of phpBB, and found that while everything is still there, a lot is in different places and some is concealed unless you know where to look. It's worse for the Moderators and Administrators - there's a trend towards icons and away from "words", which doesn't suit an oldie like me. It just takes a bit of getting used to.

But it does work better on iThings. The "stop the spammer" facilities are also cleverer: not one Chinese retailer has managed to get past the registration question on my alumni site since we updated. I used to get dozens a day.

Sounds like a perfect metaphor for a forum dedicated to period properties.

Still can't see Images and still get the Page Cant be Displayed page when I post. Which I do less as I can't see what people are talking about. Perhaps in some ways that's not a bad thing. :?
Yet I can hop over to another php 2008 forum as I just did, and it works fine.

What browser are you using? Do you have any plugins installed? Have you tried a different browser? I use several (mostly to test those other phpBB sites) and find that they all have their little quirks.

phpBB 2008 is very old in the scheme of things, and must be close to extinct. Unlike period properties, period internet software is a bad idea. Those Chinese hackers are prolific and determined

Using IE whatever the latest.

I've got 1980s software that works - and there's nothing more recent to do the job - but it's 'orrible.

IE is one of the more quirky browsers around. I only use it for testing these days, and I'm not surprised when it does strange things.

Firefox and Chrome are both free, both will import your IE Favourites, and both work well.
Firefox is more configureable but uses more memory. Chrome is slimmer and simpler.

It's worth checking the address you are using for the forum doesn't start in https, and has the www bit. If you have the https bookmarked then the forum will work slowly and some pages will not be displayed especially after posting. Change the bookmark to http. Also following links from Google will often give you the https version.

D'you know, I hadn't even noticed that my bookmark for this forum is http (no s) and has the www bit.

Most are https and no www, so something worked right!

On email links I'm still getting the ":80" suffix at the end of the site's principal URL. Whenever the link includes this, IE gives me the "This page can't be displayed" error report. If I edit the URL in the address window to remove ":80" the link works fine.

Some links have this suffix, some don't - its inclusion seems to be entirely random. :?
