Agbagb's Missus. We live in North Derbyshire, nesh and mardy are in everyday use here along with manny which is similar to mardy but with attitude! Manniest and mardiest are high scorers on Countdown that normally require the "pen cam" :lol:

I also agree with the sentiment and reckon that children are a lot tougher than we generally give them credit for.

Not all of them, I was a rather sickly little stick thin thing with knobby knees, hated the cold. Was always being forced out onto some horrible freezing field to hit a ball with some ridiculous stick contraption. Invariably caught a bug and was poorly. I don't think it did me any good at all. Physically that is, mentally is probably a different matter. I still can't abide bullies or emotional blackmail and people who try that sort of thing now end up disappointed, very disappointed.

I can remember my mother - who is very petite and feels the cold - fussing over me as a kid to make sure I wasn't cold, much to my annoyance. I always was (and still am) too warm generally, and that was living as a kid in various houses without much in the way of heating or insulation, certainly no central heating!

Now I find that even though I'm still the one who likes it cooler than most others, I'm the one who will feel the cold long before my kids do.

It is a bit of a gender thing though - my daughter feels the cold before my sons, and I've seen epic office battles fought over the air conditioning settings with a very gender-based divide! Whilst that is of course a generalisation there are apparently medical reasons why women like it to be warmer than men.

I have clear memories of childhood winter visits to my grandmother's house and lying in bed (with an extra blanket plus a couple of coats on top) while watching my breath condense in the cold bedroom air. No electric blankets in those days, though a hot water bottle was a partial relief from the freezing sheets.

I'm sure I must have felt cold, but I don't recall it being an ordeal. Besides, there was always the enticing open fire downstairs to look forward to in the morning.

FF junior was the last in his school class to wear long trousers - he didn't like them because he felt too hot in them and it took a while before he could be persuaded. These days he thinks nothing of whitewater kayaking in the middle of winter (never with gloves) and I've seen him come out of a river with ice in his hair! Yet he can become quite useless when it's really hot and when helping me to dig some new drains one summer, he could only bear to do the work in the cool of the night.

It takes all sorts I suppose.
