An astonishing man, really - I just wish he'd understood the difference between cement and lime and I'd have little to do.

It must have been a real wrench for him to leave the house if he'd spent that much time working on it. Despite his fondness for cement, it's lucky the place didn't get an owner who gave it a modern "makeover" with new roof tiles etc that many would have done both in those times and, dare I say it, even now.

Re slotted brass screws: I've always found it quite easy to mess up the slots on brass screws and that it helps to drill a pilot hole and also run a steel screw in and out first to make it easier to get the brass screw in undamaged.

And rub some soap into the threads of the screw before you insert it. The lubrication helps considerably.

Many thanks for those useful tips, which I didn't know about. That sounds like it would make it much much easier!

And Feltwell, you're absolutely correct, I think both the owner and I felt lucky to have found eachother. He said he refused a good offer from a property developer who he knew would pull it to bits.

And he's now very happy in a beautiful cob farmhouse with an orchard near Beziers, and he follows my work on the house on Facebook with great interest and many a useful pointer.

I hope all our beloved houses may be bought and sold in the same way.
