Flagstones on earth floor! Why not?

I recently lifted, removed the plastic membrane, re-laid with lime on earth, repointed and surface ground our local sandstone floor.
It is very old slabs badly re-laid in the 1980s over much older ash and cobbles.

Nah, you've got better things to look at I'm sure! The winter wheels for the car live down there, that's about as interesting as it gets. Which is not very.

Now... if I had a cellar, it would be very interesting indeed fitted out as it would be with lots of racking and other sommelier kit and a comfy chair, perhaps even two, albeit with a fine coating of dust.

Sadly, we have no cellar and trying to keep an unopened bottle of wine around here is nigh on impossible - but I can dream.

Ahh, now you see there is the error of my ways - I hardly drink. I'm not teetotal but I'm very close. No moral or other reason, just how I am, with the occasional lapse! Bottles of wine here stay unopened for a long time. My whisky collection goes down very slowly.

Friends who are into homebrew get excited about the cellar, due to the near constant temperature down there. They're very disappointed that it's mostly just a store for junk & things I don't want to ever freeze, like my pressure washer and lots of tins of paint!

For a while I was a member of the Scotch Whisky Society and regularly bought a few bottles from them - none of them cheap. One though was very pricey at about £150 and was very definitely what my American friends would call a 'Sipping Whiskey'. One day, after a few 'friends' had visited the previous night, I found that the First Lady had cracked open that bottle and the lot was gone.

Almost, but not quite, enough to end in the courts but from time to time I drag the tale out and weep into a convenient beer.

Mates - never let em near your drinks cabinet, nor the cellar.

Digressing terribly, even by usual standards, but Cubist's whisky story reminds me of my wedding.

My better half's parents ran an alarm & home security company, and a long-standing & wealthy customer of theirs - on hearing that their daughter was getting married - offered us the free use of his 1952 Rolls-Royce for the day - a beautiful car.

To say thank you I went out and bought a bottle of red wine - it was over £100, and this was 20 years ago, a lot of money for us at the time - and gave it to my father-in-law to pass on.

Anyway, a few weeks later he told us that he didn't think that just a bottle of wine was enough, so he'd gone out and bought a bottle of whisky as a thank you instead and drunk the bottle of wine himself one Sunday after dinner!

"What whisky did you get?" , asked I. "Oh, a bottle of Bells" came the reply - yes, just your bog standard, cheap horrible Bells blend! You should have seen his face when I told him the wine was over £100. "Oh, I thought it was rather nice" came the sheepish reply.

Thanks. It's level and the flags don't wobble I'm getting more confident with taking things on as I learn more. Can't wait to be able to work in there, I'm halfway through making a big old english (nicholson) workbench which will sit near the window.
